The 2019 Composition Competition

 

The New Orleans Chamber Orchestra and Spectri Sonori series are pleased to announce an open call for scores. The chosen work will be performed by NOCO at the Marigny Opera House in New Orleans, LA on June 29, 2019. The work must be submitted by April 1, 2019 and there is an entry fee of $30.

 

Eligible Works 

-The total performing ensemble consists of 4 first violins, 4 second violins, 3 violas, 3 cellos, 1 string bass.  

 

-The submitted work must be scored for string orchestra and may optionally include a keyboard or piano part as long as it is not a solo or featured instrument (e.g. piano concerti)

 

-Works without strings, works for smaller chamber ensembles (i.e. string quartet or sextet), and works that exceed our instrumentation will not be considered. Solo works (i.e. concerti) also will not be considered.

-Works that have been performed are eligible, but works that have won prizes or been recorded and released professionally will not be considered.

-Composers who have entered or won previous NOCO competitions will be considered eligible. 

 

-The work shall not exceed 10 minutes in length. Individual movements under 10 minutes from larger works will be considered. If such a work is selected, the music directors may elect to review the complete work for the possibility of inclusion in the program. However, composers should only submit the movement(s) within the time limit that they wish the judges to initially consider. 

 

Submission Rules 

-Composers of any age or nationality are eligible

 

-Composers need to fill out the submission form

 

-Composers can submit any number of works, but must pay a separate entry fee for each work. 

 

-A $30 submission fee will be paid via PayPal as part of this form. 

 

-The score of the work will be emailed to the following address: nococompetition@gmail.com 

 

-If selected, the composer must provide professional quality parts and score to NOCO by May 15, 2019. The winning composer will be notified by May 1. If the winner is unavailable or otherwise deemed ineligible, runners up will be contacted to take the place of the winning composition. 

 

DEADLINE: March 1, 2019

ENTRY FEE: $30  

 

Winner 

-The chosen work will be performed at the Marigny Opera House by NOCO on June 29, 2019. 

 

-The chosen work will be recorded in performance. 

 

-The composer will be reimbursed up to $500 for travel and accommodation expenses to attend the rehearsals and concert. NOCO will help coordinate transportation, meals, and sightseeing activities. 

 

-Competition finalists will be expected to provide a short CV, as well authorization for performance, online publication, recording and broadcasting of the work.

About Spectri Sonori 

SPECTRI SONORI a concert series and a chamber music ensemble specializing in performance of contemporary music, has been in residence at the Newcomb Music Department, Tulane University, since 1987. The series has presented the most recent compositions along with the established masterpieces of the recent past. The aim of SPECTRI SONORI is to introduce the New Orleans audience to the best works in the contemporary music literature and to encourage composers to create new works by offering an international composition competition and various special events in conjunction with the annual concert series. Among the grants the series has been awarded are grants from the French Government, Louisiana State Arts Council, Newcomb Foundation, Leonie D. Rothschild, Presser Foundation of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and a grant and a "Certificate of Excellence for Contribution to the Arts in the Greater New Orleans Community" from the David M. Metzner M.D. Foundation for the Arts.
